Writing Task One

线图(line graph)

据考生回忆，此次考察的题目是1984年至2009年，在英国，三种不同作案手法的犯罪率情况说明。

线图(line graph)曾经出现在剑桥系列丛书B5P29“Proportion of population aged 65 and over”---三线图、B6P30“Global water use by sector”+“Water consumption in Brazil and Congo in 2000”---线图+表格、B7P53“Fish and meat consumption”---四线图以及B8P101“Goods transported in UK(1974-2002)”---四线图。线图写作的考察点在于：首先，线图的变化趋势必须要在body paragraph(s)中彰显突出，换言之，就是线的“上升、下降、稳定，持平”趋势论述，以及“极值”的呈现(在主体段落中必须要进行具体数据客观解析);其次，在具体写作的过程中，切忌词语的误用，for instance，“apogee” 这个词的意思为“顶点;最高点”，但这个词语在剑桥词典中的解释为”the most successful, popular or powerful point”---“最成功、最受欢迎或最强有力的一点”，所以如果想要表达“登顶”这个概念时，不可写成“reach the apogee”，“apogee”这个单词固然好，但却不可以用来对具体数据描述，词语的complexity固然重要，但如若只学到皮毛就去使用，不但不会令文章锦上添花，反倒产生了“画猫不成反类犬”的效果，建议使用“peak”(既可用作动词，又可用作名词);再次，注意一下本题目中关于“数目”的英文呈现方式，先给出几个替换表达以飨读者：“the number of”、“the amount of”、“the proportion of”，注意“of”后面所接语汇的特点，比如the number of后面应该接可数名词的复数形式。

Scientific research should be carried out and controlled by the government rather than the private companies.

此类题目是典型的argumentative essay，可以遵照单边类文章的写作模式，现从政府进行scientific research所具备的advantages着手，首先，政府可以为scientific research提供强大的经济支持，The government has the ability to spend as much on scientific research as is socially desirable。其次，政府可以将研究成果更大程度上惠泽广大民众，An advantage to government sponsored research is that the results are publicly shared, whereas with privately funded research the ideas are controlled by a single group of people. Scientific research has increasingly been coupled to invention, where invention is defined as the human activity directed toward the creation of new and improved practical products and process. The social gains we may expect from the scientific research are obvious, ultimately, human being will be the beneficiary of the scientific feats。最后，政府开展scientific research激发人们的inspirations，scientific innovations often foreshadow or inspire further ideas unintentionally.

在这里可以举例证明：for instance, NASA’s quest to put a man on the moon inspired them to develop better sound recording and reading technologies, in turn, its research was furthered by the music industry, who used it to develop audio cassettes. Audio cassettes, being smaller and able to store music, quickly dominated the music industry and increased the availability of music et al.
